Faith & Fulfillment
Chapters 7 & 8 of Luke's gospel continue to depict Jesus as the embodiment of God’s salvation and fulfillment of His promises, not just for Israel, but for the whole world. The stories of Luke 7.1-17 have particularly strong echoes of the lives and ministries of both Elijah and Elisha, Israel’s two greatest healing prophets in the Old Testament. But this text shows us that the salvation that Jesus brings is realized through a strange mixture of desperate, humble faith and also through the mystery of God’s divine sovereignty. Faith is central to the Christian life. But even more central, and even more mysterious, is the sovereign grace and saving power of God in the Lord Jesus Christ. In this message, Pastor Ben encourages us to embody the humble faith of the Roman centurion. And we are also encouraged to embody radical hope through the story of the sovereign saving of the widow’s son.
